The Northwestern administration of Pakistan said that militants ambushed a military convoy near the Afghan border and killed at least 8 soldiers.
The attack took place in the Khyber area, a border district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and targeted soldiers who were returning to their base after an operation against the insurgents.
The ambush injured at least three soldiers, one of whom was in critical condition, according to many security officials who refused to be named and spoke to VOA.
It is said that several attackers were also killed in the ensuing confrontation.
Pakistani military media did not immediately comment on the deadly attack and the reported casualties.
