Many are said to have died in a car accident on a road in the Sidama region of southern Ethiopia.
Regional authorities and hospital security officials have been quoted as saying that at least 71 people died in the accident that took place in Bona district in the east of Sidama. Sidama is south of Addis Adaba.
Mate Mengesha, one of the heads of the local governments in the area where the tragedy happened, told the media that the accident happened in the Galana River, which is 125 miles away from Hawassa, the capital of Sidama Autonomous Region.
He said that a truck carrying many passengers went off a bridge or dam and fell into the river.
The dead included 68 men and three women. The victims were said to be returning home from a wedding ceremony.
