Mogadishu, May 12, 2025 – The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, has carried out a precision airstrike targeting members of the ISIS-affiliated Khawarij group operating in Somalia.
The airstrike took place approximately 70 kilometers southeast of Bosaso, in the Bari region of the Puntland State of Somalia.
The operation aimed to disrupt the movements and capabilities of ISIS militants in the region, while providing direct support to the Puntland Security Forces (Daraawiish) in their ongoing campaign to eliminate extremist elements hiding in the mountainous terrain.
As the operation is still ongoing, efforts are underway to assess the impact, including enemy casualties and the success of the overall mission.
The Federal Government of Somalia has welcomed and praised the continued cooperation with international partners, especially the United States, in the joint effort to ensure peace, security, and the defeat of terrorist groups that pose a threat to Somalia and the broader Horn of Africa region.
