African leaders meeting in Uganda on Friday called for more peacekeeping troops to be sent to Somalia to defend against al-Shabaab attacks.
The summit of African leaders with troops in Somalia, held in Entebbe, was attended by leaders from Uganda, Kenya, Djibouti, Egypt, and Ethiopia, along with representatives from international organizations including the United Nations, the African Union, IGAD, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
A statement from the summit said that additional troops may come from Egypt.
More than 10,000 African Union troops are currently in Somalia, nearly half of whom are from Uganda. The African Union troops are authorized by the United Nations Security Council and have been deployed there in various forms of peacekeeping operations since 2007.
