The G7 countries meeting in Quebec, Canada

Foreign ministers from the G7 developed countries are expected to gather for several days of talks in Quebec, Canada. The meetings will focus on ending the war between Russia and Ukraine and supporting Ukraine, which has been at war with Russia for three years.

The talks follow the US decision to resume intelligence sharing and military support to Ukraine, after senior officials from the two countries met in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

After nearly eight hours of talks, Ukraine announced on Tuesday that it was ready to accept the US proposal for a temporary 30-day ceasefire, which would require Russia to agree.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking to reporters on his way to Canada on Wednesday, said the US would establish “multiple points of contact” with Russia to assess its willingness to sign a peace deal.

Rubio added that observers would be needed to monitor the situation if Russia agreed to a ceasefire.

US President Donald Trump, speaking at the White House on Wednesday, also said that it was “up to Russia” to agree to a ceasefire.
