Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was released from prison on Saturday, a day after a Seoul court overturned his arrest and allowed him to stand trial without being detained.

Prosecutors indicted and arrested him in January, after accusing him of crimes including the emergency decree he imposed in South Korea on December 3 of last year, a move that plunged the country into major political turmoil.

The majority of liberal lawmakers voted to remove Yoon from office, effectively banning him from office.

The Constitutional Court is debating whether to formally remove Yoon from office or reinstate him. If the court upholds his removal, Koreans will elect a new president within two months.
