Somalia has officially joined the United Nations Security Council after 54 years, having already been elected as a non-permanent member for the period 2025-2026.

This new membership started today, and it was announced that Somalia is committed to protecting the United Nations Charter and working for international peace and security.

Somalia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Mr. Abukar Dahir Osman (Abukar Baalle) said in a brief statement, “We are committed to maintaining the United Nations Charter, and we are committed to maintaining international peace and security.”

Somalia has become one of the 15 members of the Security Council, especially the 10 non-permanent members and will represent East Africa in this seat for a period of two years starting from January 1, 2025 until 2026.
