The Eritrean government has threatened to cut ties with Somalia if the government of Hassan Sheikh gives Ethiopia access to the Red Sea.

Senior diplomat Abdiqadir Idris, who advises the Eritrean government on Somalia issues, also expressed strong concern about the agreement between Turkey and Ethiopia.

Diplomat Abdiqadir Idris described the Ankara agreement between President Hassan Sheikh and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as ambiguous and unreliable.

He added that if it is clear that Somalia will provide a sea route from Ethiopia to the Red Sea, they will respond by maintaining diplomatic relations with the Federal Government of Somalia.

“There was no special agreement between the Eritrean government and Somalia. The last agreement between Somalia, Eritrea and Egypt was to protect Somalia from Ethiopia, which has invaded Somalia’s waters,” said Abdiqadir Idris.

He also pointed out that he never expected the government of Somalia to sign an agreement with Ethiopia regarding the provision of a sea route from the Red Sea.

Abdiqadir Idris, the Eritrean foreign ministry adviser on Somali affairs, who gave an interview to the BBC, also mentioned that if Somalia signs a maritime agreement with Ethiopia, it could threaten the security of the Horn of Africa.
