The United Nations Security Council is set to hold a special session on Wednesday, December 18, to discuss the new African Union Somalia Transition Mission (AUSSOM), which is set to replace the current African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) on December 31, 2024.
The Federal Government of Somalia is expected to present a critical agenda at the meeting, highlighting the importance of the AUSSOM mission. This agenda was previously agreed upon by Somalia, the United Nations, and the African Union following a series of consultations in Mogadishu.
Somalia now has an opportunity to shape the composition of the mission, excluding countries it deems unsuitable while including nations that meet its specific requirements. This move reflects Somalia’s growing confidence in the strength and capacity of its national armed forces.
A Somali delegation is set to depart from Mogadishu today to participate in the discussions. During their visit, the delegation is expected to hold private meetings with representatives from the Security Council member states to garner support for Somalia’s positions on the mission.
The funding for African Union forces in Somalia is provided by the United Nations, specifically through the Security Council, while the African Union is responsible for designing operational plans for troops drawn from various member states.
