The Somali Ministry of Family Affairs and Human Rights has strongly condemned a shocking incident in which four children were burned to death, an act allegedly committed by their father in Hargeisa.

According to initial reports received by the Ministry, the tragedy stemmed from a family dispute between the children’s parents. The court in Hargeisa had reportedly ruled that the children be placed under the custody of their mother, a decision that angered the father. Enraged by the ruling, the man is said to have set fire to the house where the children were staying, resulting in their deaths.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Ministry described the act as “heinous and completely contrary to Somali and Islamic values.” The statement added that no parent should ever harm their children and urged Somali society to reject all forms of domestic violence.

The Ministry called on security agencies in Hargeisa to carry out a swift and thorough investigation and to ensure that the perpetrator is brought to justice without delay. It also appealed to the public and community leaders to remain vigilant and proactive in preventing family-related violence.

“The Ministry urges Somali society to show compassion and unity, and to report family conflicts early so that tragedies like this can be prevented,” the statement read.

Security forces, the Ministry emphasized, have a vital responsibility to protect the  public especially women and children by ensuring they live in safe, peaceful environments free from abuse and violence.
