The Minister of Health and Social Care of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Dr. Ali Haji Adam, responding to the responsibility arising from the recent incident at Banadir Maternity and Children’s Hospital and recognizing the urgent need for administrative reform has appointed Mr. Abdirizak Sharif Ali as the new Director General of Banadir Maternity and Children’s Hospital.
This change comes at a time when the Minister of Health paid an urgent visit to the Banadir Maternity and Children’s Hospital, following the shocking incident that went viral on social media involving a Somali woman who gave birth in distress at the hospital’s gate.
The woman, who was reportedly denied emergency medical assistance, faced a life-threatening situation and ended up giving birth on the pavement outside Banadir Maternity and Children’s Hospital.
The Minister expressed his gratitude to the former Director General for her service and contributions during her tenure, noting that the ongoing administrative changes are part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen maternal and child healthcare in Somalia.
Administrative changes will also be made in some departments of the hospital, and the staff who were on duty on the night of the incident will be suspended from work.
The Minister instructed the new Director General to carry out his duties with responsibility, transparency, patient care, and accountability. He also wished him success and progress in ensuring that Somali mothers and children receive prompt and compassionate healthcare services.
