A devastating bus crash in South Africa’s Limpopo province has left 42 people dead and 49 injured, according to local officials. The victims include seven children, 18 women, and 17 men, many of whom were from Zimbabwe and Malawi.
The accident occurred on Sunday night along a mountainous section of the N1 highway, while the bus was en route from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa offered his condolences, calling it a tragedy not only for South Africa but also for the neighbouring countries of Zimbabwe and Malawi.
Authorities, including Transport Minister Barbara Creecy, are expected to visit the crash site and meet with survivors.
