Mogadishu, Somalia – A large explosion has rocked the area surrounding Somalia’s Presidential Palace in Mogadishu, witnesses have reported.
The blast occurred close to a heavily guarded security checkpoint near the palace. Some reports indicate that the target may have been the Godka Jilacow detention facility, which is operated by the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA).
Moments after the explosion, heavy gunfire erupted, lasting for several minutes and causing fear among residents living nearby.
Security officials say the area has been sealed off, with troops blocking all roads leading in and out of the site as investigations continue.
Authorities have not yet released details about casualties or the cause of the explosion.
