Somalia President Hassan Sheikh delivered a notable speech at the official inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), addressing regional dynamics and Somalia’s position on the Nile River issue.
The President said that every country can pursue its own interests, but there is a need to avoid political insecurity that leads to conflict in the region.
The President called for the Nile River issue to be addressed with mutual respect and balance, rather than confrontation over the development and use of natural resources.
President Hassan also indicated that they could be part of regional peace efforts, especially in the conflict between neighboring countries Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan.
African leaders attending the event included Kenyan President William Ruto, Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh, and South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
